Advancing a common European framework for reliable and comparable fire safety data
Fire Safe Europe recently took part in the first Steering Committee meeting of the EU FIRESTAT 2 project, titled “Harmonized fire statistics as a tool for enhancing pan-European fire safety efforts.” The meeting marked an important milestone in advancing a more coordinated and data-driven approach to fire safety across Europe.
Building on the initial pilot phase, EU FIRESTAT 2 aims to test and refine a common European framework for fire data collection. The objective is to develop a practical and robust system that enables the collection, sharing and use of fire safety data at all levels — national, regional and local.
The availability of reliable and comparable data is a fundamental enabler for effective fire safety policies. In its absence, efforts to identify risks, prioritise interventions and measure progress remain fragmented across Member States. Establishing a harmonised approach to fire statistics is therefore essential to support better-informed decision-making and stronger policy outcomes.
For Fire Safe Europe, this initiative represents a key step forward in several respects. It contributes to improving evidence-based policymaking by ensuring that decisions are grounded in consistent and high-quality data. It also supports greater alignment across Member States, reducing fragmentation and facilitating the exchange of best practices. More broadly, it strengthens the foundations for a more coordinated European approach to fire safety.
Fire Safe Europe looks forward to actively contributing to the next phases of the project and to supporting the development of a coherent and effective EU-wide fire data framework.
