European Parliament calls for stronger EU coordination and safer homes across Member States
On Monday, the European Parliament’s Committee on Housing (HOUS) has adopted its final report on tackling Europe’s housing crisis, setting out detailed recommendations for decent, sustainable and affordable housing across the EU. In its final report, the European Parliament endorsed a series of provisions, including one that brings fire safety explicitly into the text. The report:
Calls for new dwellings to meet reasonable quality and habitability standards on fire safety, insulation, energy efficiency and indoor air quality;
Calls for better coordination at EU level to increase fire safety in the Member States.
This inclusion is an important recognition of the role of fire safety in quality housing, as an integral part of people’s right to safe, decent homes.
We now call on the European Commission to fully integrate this commitment into the implementation of the European Affordable Housing Plan, ensuring fire safety is systematically embedded alongside energy performance and quality standards.
