Fire Safety at the Heart of Europe’s Housing Policies

10 Nov 2025

High-level European Parliament debate highlights fire safety as a pillar of the EU Housing Agenda

Last week, Fire Safe Europe had the pleasure to co-organise a high-level debate in the European Parliament on Fire Safety and Housing, held during the European Fire Safety Week. The event was hosted by MEP Ciaran Mullooly, co-hosted by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere and MEP Adam Jarubas, and moderated by former MEP Ciarán Cuffe.

Fire Safe Europe extends its sincere thanks to the hosting Members of the European Parliament, to the representatives of the European Commission, and to the many stakeholders who actively contributed to the discussion. Together, participants explored how the European Union can ensure that homes are not only affordable and sustainable, but also inherently safe.

During the debate, Fire Safe Europe highlighted two core messages.

First, fire safety remains primarily a national responsibility, but it also has a clear European dimension. The European Union can bring real added value through the coordination of data, research and guidance, helping to strengthen national frameworks while fully respecting local competences.

Second, fire safety must be a priority of EU housing policies. No home can be considered truly decent, affordable or sustainable if it places lives at risk. Safety is the foundation upon which all other housing objectives must stand.

The exchange confirmed a growing cross-party and institutional recognition that fire safety must become a structural pillar of the EU Housing Agenda, alongside affordability, sustainability and energy efficiency.

Fire Safe Europe warmly thanks all those who made this important discussion possible and all partners and stakeholders who contribute every day to advancing safer buildings across Europe and to #KeepEUFireSafe.
