EC Survey: Fire safety of recharging infrastructure and electric vehicles in underground/above ground covered parking areas

Fire Safe Europe

19 Jun 2023

The survey is the first crucial step that will guide the work of the Commission’s Taskforce developing guidelines to ensure fire safety for recharging infrastructure and electric vehicles in underground and above ground covered parking areas.

The European Commission has recently published a survey to collect information on legislation, guidelines, codes relating to fire safety for recharging infrastructure and electric vehicles in underground/above ground covered parking areas.

The deadline to participate is July 20th 2023

The survey is the first crucial step that will guide the work of the Commission’s Taskforce developing guidelines to ensure fire safety for recharging infrastructure and electric vehicles in underground and above ground covered parking areas. The Taskforce was created in the context of the Sustainable Transport Forum (STF),  set up to assist the Commission in implementing the Union’s activities and programmes aimed at fostering the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure to contribute to the European Union energy and climate goals.

Together with other relevant stakeholders, Fire Safe Europe is member and active leader of the Taskforce. In fact, we believe that electrification solutions such as electric vehicles (EV) and their recharging points are needed to decarbonise the built environment but can create new fire scenarios by introducing a new electrical load to building systems.

Thus, we need to properly address the fire safety of these solutions to boost the deployment of technologies incentivized by the EU policies to decarbonise the built environment.  Lack of safety awareness and understanding among building owners, occupants, and the public may lead to tragic accidents and to concerns and resistance to the deployment of decarbonisation solutions.
