Ensuring fire safety evolves alongside Europe’s energy transition in buildings
Fire Safe Europe attended the webinar organised under the Fire Information Exchange Platform (FIEP) of the European Commission, focusing on energy storage systems and technical installations. The discussion takes place in the context of DG ENER’s tender supporting the development of the fire safety section of the EPBD Implementation Guidelines under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
The exchanges today contribute to shaping future EU guidance addressing battery energy storage systems, explosion risks, large-scale fire testing lessons learned, and the safe handling of flammable refrigerants. As Europe accelerates the electrification and renovation of buildings — through batteries, heat pumps and other technical systems — it is essential that fire safety considerations evolve at the same pace as sustainability ambitions.
