EU consultations on fire safety in electrified buildings: have your say before 10 April!

24 Mar 2026

Stakeholder input invited on PV systems and building envelope under the EPBD implementation process

Following the recent webinar organised under the European Commission’s Fire Information Exchange Platform (FIEP), stakeholder consultations are now underway to support the development of fire safety guidance linked to the electrification and renovation of buildings, in the context of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The consultation focuses on two key areas where new fire safety challenges are emerging as part of the energy transition:

Deadline: 10 April 2026

As Europe accelerates the renovation of its building stock and the deployment of electrification technologies, it is essential that fire safety considerations evolve at the same pace as sustainability objectives.

Technologies such as photovoltaic systems, alongside changes in building envelope design, are reshaping how buildings perform in fire scenarios. This makes it increasingly important to adopt a forward-looking and integrated approach to fire safety.

Fire Safe Europe is contributing to this consultation by bringing a European-level, cross-cutting perspective, building on its ongoing work on a European fire safety strategy and inspection practices.

Our input emphasises in particular:

  • the need for a holistic, system-based approach to fire safety, reflecting real building configurations;

  • the role of passive fire protection in limiting fire development and spread;

  • the importance of inspection and maintenance to ensure that fire safety performance is maintained over time.

Fire Safe Europe encourages all stakeholders — including industry, public authorities, and fire safety professionals — to contribute to the consultation and help shape future EU guidance. Your input will be essential to ensure that fire safety remains fully integrated into Europe’s building transition.
